Air Medal

Description

The Air Medal was established in 1942 and is awarded to U.S. military and civilian personnel for single acts of heroism or meritorious achievements while participating in aerial flight and foreign military personnel in actual combat in support of operations. Required achievement is less than that required for the Distinguished Flying Cross, but must be accomplished with distinction above and beyond that expected of professional airmen.

Col. Charles W. “IE” Hardie served in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 to 1989. As a pilot he flew C-124, C-7, C-123, and C-141 aircraft for a total of 11,002 flying hours. He served at Cam Ranh Bay, South Vietnam, in 1969. He was stationed at Dover AFB, Delaware, from 1980-1989. This Air Medal was awarded to him.
