Earl Russell served as a tail gunner on a modified B-24 Liberator out of Harrington, England as part of Operation Carpetbagger. The Carpetbaggers secretly dropped supplies and Office of Strategic Services (OSS) (forerunner of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)) agents behind enemy lines in France under the cover of darkness during World War II.
